Understanding Auto Leases

A lease payment has two main parts: depreciation (the car's value loss) and rent charge (the finance cost). The residual value is what the car will be worth at lease end.

Negotiate the sale price, not the monthly payment. A lower cap cost means a lower payment. Also look for manufacturer lease specials with low money factors.

The Formula

Depreciation = (Cap Cost - Residual) / Term

Rent Charge = (Cap Cost + Residual) × MF

Payment = Depreciation + Rent Charge + Tax
