Understanding WHR

Waist-to-Hip Ratio (WHR) is a measure of body fat distribution. Higher ratios indicate more abdominal fat, which is linked to increased health risks including cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and metabolic syndrome.

Why WHR Matters

"Apple-shaped" body types (higher WHR) have greater health risks than "pear-shaped" types, even at the same BMI.

The Formula

WHR = Waist Circumference ÷ Hip Circumference

According to WHO, a WHR above 0.90 for males and 0.85 for females indicates central obesity.
