About BMI

BMI is a screening tool, not a diagnostic measure. It doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or body composition. Athletes and muscular individuals may have a high BMI but low body fat. Consult a healthcare professional for a complete assessment.

How BMI Works

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a simple calculation using a person's height and weight. The formula is the same for both men and women and all adult age groups.

WHO Standard

"BMI provides a reasonable estimate of body fatness for most people."

The Formula

Metric: BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height² (m²)

Imperial: BMI = (weight (lb) ÷ height² (in²)) × 703

Example: 70kg ÷ (1.75m × 1.75m) = 22.9 BMI

BMI Categories (Adults)

CategoryBMI Range
Underweight< 18.5
Normal weight18.5 – 24.9
Overweight25 – 29.9
Obese≥ 30

Note: BMI is not suitable for children, pregnant women, or athletes. It's a screening tool only.

How to Use

About the BMI Calculator

What it calculates

Calculates Body Mass Index (BMI) from height and weight, then classifies the result into standard weight categories.

When to use it

Use as a quick screening tool for weight status. BMI is widely used in fitness and clinical settings but does not measure body fat directly.

Formula

BMI = weight (kg) / [height (m)]²

Example

A person weighing 70 kg and 175 cm tall has a BMI of about 22.9, which falls in the normal range.
