Margin (Profit Margin)
The percentage of the selling price that is profit.
Margin = (Price - Cost) / Price × 100
Markup
The percentage added to the cost to get the selling price.
Markup = (Price - Cost) / Cost × 100
Key Insight
A 50% markup ≠ 50% margin. A 50% markup gives you a 33.3% margin. This is a common mistake in pricing strategy.
