How Billing Works
  • Domestic LT-IA connections are billed bi-monthly (~60 days).
  • Charges use telescopic slabs — each unit is priced in order from the lowest slab upward.
  • At ≤500 units, the first 200 units are free; above 500, only 100 units are free.

Worked Examples

Example A: 450 units (≤500 tier)

Total consumption is 450 units — you stay in the lower tier with 200 free units.

  1. 1.First 200 units: Free (200 × ₹0 = ₹0)
  2. 2.201–400 units (200 units): 200 × ₹4.95 = ₹990
  3. 3.401–450 units (50 units): 50 × ₹6.65 = ₹332.50
  4. 4.Energy charges: ₹990 + ₹332.50 = ₹1,322.50

Total Bill: ₹1,322.50

Example B: 550 units (>500 tier)

Crossing 500 units shifts you to Tier 2 with only 100 free units.

  1. 1.First 100 units: Free (100 × ₹0 = ₹0)
  2. 2.101–400 units (300 units): 300 × ₹4.95 = ₹1,485
  3. 3.401–500 units (100 units): 100 × ₹6.65 = ₹665
  4. 4.501–550 units (50 units): 50 × ₹8.80 = ₹440
  5. 5.Energy charges: ₹1,485 + ₹665 + ₹440 = ₹2,590

Total Bill: ₹2,590.00

How TNEB / TANGEDCO Calculates Domestic Bills

  • Domestic LT-IA connections are billed bi-monthly (~60 days), not monthly.
  • Charges use telescopic slabs regulated by TNERC — each unit is priced from the lowest slab upward.
  • At ≤500 units per cycle, the first 200 units are free; above 500 units, only 100 units are free and higher slabs apply to the entire consumption.
  • Crossing 500 units even by 1 unit can significantly increase your bill due to tier recalculation.

Key Billing Terms

Energy Charges
The cost of electricity consumed, calculated by multiplying units (kWh) by applicable slab rates.
Fixed Charges
A recurring charge for maintaining the distribution connection, often based on sanctioned load or a flat monthly fee.
Telescopic Slabs
Each unit is priced in sequence from the lowest slab upward until total consumption is covered.
Electricity Duty
A state government tax levied as a percentage of energy charges.
FAC (Fuel Adjustment Charge)
A variable surcharge to account for changes in fuel and power purchase costs.
Meter Rent
A fee for the electricity meter, though many domestic consumers are exempt.
500-Unit Threshold
If bi-monthly consumption exceeds 500 units, the entire bill is recalculated under Tier 2 with fewer free units and additional higher slabs.
Bi-monthly Billing
TNEB reads meters and issues bills approximately every 60 days, not monthly.

Tips to Reduce Your Bill

  • Monitor consumption to stay below 500 units per bi-monthly cycle — crossing by even 1 unit triggers Tier 2 recalculation.
  • Replace incandescent bulbs with LED lights to cut lighting costs by up to 80%.
  • Set AC temperature to 24–26°C; each degree higher saves ~6% AC energy.
  • Unplug devices on standby — chargers and TVs draw power even when off.
  • Track meter readings mid-cycle to avoid surprise bill jumps.

About the TNEB Bill Calculator

What it calculates

Estimates your Tamil Nadu domestic (LT-IA) electricity bill using TANGEDCO bi-monthly telescopic slab rates. Shows slab-wise breakdown and highlights the 500-unit threshold cliff.

When to use it

Use when planning household electricity costs in Tamil Nadu, comparing usage before/after AC season, or understanding why crossing 500 bi-monthly units sharply increases your bill.

Example

At 350 units (≤500 tier): 200 free + 150 × ₹4.95 = ₹742.50. At 501 units (>500 tier): only 100 free units apply and higher slabs kick in — bill jumps from ~₹1,655 at 500 units to ~₹2,159 at 501.
