Parents and clinics often need age expressed in months during the first years of life. Month-based age is more precise than rounded years for growth charts, vaccine schedules, and developmental screening.

Why months matter for babies

WHO and national growth charts plot height and weight by age in months up to 24 months, then switch to years. A 15-month-old and an 18-month-old can differ significantly in motor and language milestones.

Daycare and preschool forms may ask "age in months" for children under 3 because year-only answers are too coarse.

Reading total months vs years and months

Total months is the straight count of calendar months between dates. Years and remaining months decompose that total—for example, 18 months equals 1 year and 6 months.

For clinical contexts, always use the reference date of the appointment or assessment, not an approximate "today."

Worked example

A child born January 15, 2025, assessed on August 6, 2026, has lived through 18 full calendar month boundaries from January to July 2026 plus partial months—yielding about 18–19 months depending on exact boundary rules.

Our calculator uses standard calendar month difference for consistency with medical charting software.
