Zodiac Year

2000

The Chinese zodiac assigns one of twelve animals to each year in a repeating cycle, combined with one of five elements. Understanding both layers enriches New Year traditions and cultural identity discussions.

The twelve-year animal cycle

Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and Pig rotate every 12 years. 2024 was a Dragon year; 2025 is Snake; 2026 is Horse.

Each animal carries symbolic traits in folklore—Dragon for ambition, Rabbit for diplomacy—but these are cultural metaphors, not scientific personality tests.

Five elements (Wu Xing)

Metal, Water, Wood, Fire, and Earth pair with animals in a 60-year cycle (12 animals × 5 elements). A Metal Dragon differs symbolically from a Wood Dragon born 40 years apart.

Element pairing uses the heavenly stems formula tied to the calendar year.

Lunar New Year boundary

A baby born in January 2026 before Lunar New Year may traditionally belong to the 2025 Snake year rather than 2026 Horse. Festivals and zodiac souvenirs follow lunar boundaries.

For precise lunar assignment, cross-check the Lunar New Year date for your birth year. This calculator uses Gregorian year for quick reference.
