International age (만 나이) matches the global standard: you are 0 at birth and gain one year on each birthday. Since June 2023, this is the legal default for most civil and administrative purposes in Korea.

Traditional age (세는 나이) starts at 1 at birth and increases by one every January 1. A baby born on December 31 can be considered 2 years old just two days later. This system persists in family settings and casual speech.

Year age (연 나이) is calculated as the current calendar year minus your birth year, without checking whether your birthday has passed. It is still referenced for military conscription, alcohol purchase limits, and some school enrollment rules.

The Korean Age Unification Act aimed to reduce confusion in contracts, healthcare, and government services by making international age the standard reference. Hospitals, employers, and legal documents increasingly quote 만 나이.

However, statutes that depend on calendar-year cohorts were explicitly preserved. If you are applying for conscription or checking drinking-age rules, you may still need 연 나이 rather than 만 나이.

When a form does not specify which system to use, international age is the safest default for official paperwork in 2026.

Consider someone born on March 15, 1995, evaluated on August 6, 2026. International age is 31 because their birthday in 2026 has passed. Year age is 2026 − 1995 = 31. Traditional age is 32 because everyone gained a year on January 1, 2026, and they were already counted as 31 before that.

If the same person checked on February 1, 2026, international age would be 30 (birthday not yet reached), year age would still be 31, and traditional age would be 32.

Korean social hierarchy (형, 언니, 선배) often starts with birth year rather than exact age. Asking "몇 년생?" (what year were you born?) is common even when international age is legally standard.

For K-pop and drama fans comparing idol ages, international age is now the norm on official profiles, but community discussions may mix systems. When precision matters for eligibility or contracts, always confirm which age type the form requires.
